World Refugees Day
Each year, thousands of people, driven by violence and despair, risk their lives embarking on perilous journeys to safe havens. Migration is a key issue on the political agenda, often seen as a threat. But what about the rights of those fleeing? Refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, undocumented individuals: behind these terms are human beings, rarely acknowledged in public debate. Why does the reception crisis in Belgium constitute a human rights violation? Is the EU orchestrating pushbacks with its new migration pact? Are there no more humane alternatives?
Are you interested in these issues? Then register for this event organised by Vluchtelingenwerk Vlaanderen and De Roma, in partnership with other organisations.
MSF will be there!
Our colleague Caroline Willemen, along with various experts including Flor Didden (11.11.11), Stefaan Peirsman (ACV), and Pascal Debruyne (Odisee University College), will engage in a roundtable discussion to address the blind spots in the current migration debate. This event is an opportunity to discover inspiring initiatives, both large and small, that promote solidarity with people on the move and the undocumented.
The evening will conclude with a debate, enriched by these discussions, featuring Saar Depuydt, humanitarian worker and Human Rights Award laureate, Wali Sediqi, entrepreneurship coach, and Benoit Dhondt, lawyer specializing in migration and refugee law, moderated by Samira Bendadi, journalist at MO* Magazine.
