Logistics Mentoring & Development MIO – (m/f/x) – MSF Belgium
CONTEXT
At MSF, Logistics (Log) aims to provide a safe, functional, and effective care environment for our patients, the populations we assist, and our teams through a pragmatic and solution-oriented approach.
Our work involves engineering appropriate solutions that connect medical activities (grouped into Logistics Intervention families) and operational and contextual parameters with technical expertise in medical equipment management, construction, shelter, energy, HVAC, cold chain, motorized fleet, telecommunications, GIS, air operations, and more. Given the diversity and constant evolution of MSF’s operations, Logistics teams are continuously adapting and innovating to meet complex and shifting needs.
The HQ Logistics Department is structured into three units: the Log Support Unit (LSU), the Log Workforce Unit (LWFU), and the Log Knowledge Management Unit (LKMU).
Together, they ensure that Logistics remains aligned with MSF’s humanitarian mission and responsive to evolving operational needs in a rapidly changing technological and global landscape.
As a Log Mentoring & Development MIO (Mobile Implementation Officer) you will be part of the LWFU, which tailors HR and learning strategies to the specific realities of the logistics workforce, aligning recruitment, development, and career paths with operational needs while fostering diversity, equity, and collaboration.
The Log Mentoring & Development MIO provides on-the-job mentoring and formative supervision to strengthen Log Leadership in Operations (including but not limited to LogCo (Log Coordinator), deputy LogCo and (LTL) Log Team Leader profiles), with a direct impact on confidence and operational readiness for junior leaders and/or in highly challenging operational environments, aligning with the L&D framework. Through a strong partnership with the upcoming Beyond Trainings – Log Leadership initiative, the role adapts learning tools and methodologies to Logs in operations, leverages the full support of the Log Department, and contributes to tools and processes evolution through direct operational experience.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Mentoring & Skills Acceleration for Operational readiness
-
Provide context adapted mentoring delivered directly in the operational environment to newly appointed Log leaders (including but not limited to LogCo, deputy LogCo and LTL profiles), while ensuring clarity on complementary roles with the Log Cell and/or functional manager to avoid overlap and confusion
-
Support mentees in strengthening their operational leadership, including prioritization, decision making under pressure, adapting to emergency pace, and aligning logistics choices with operational/medical strategy, and fostering effective inter-departmental collaboration
-
Accompany mentees in developing role-specific, managerial, and staff development skills through practical, hands-on support
-
Integrate wellbeing focused mentoring that reinforces resilience, selfcare, self-compassion, and sustainable work practices. Help mentees navigate setbacks and turn challenges into learning opportunities
-
Strengthen mentee’s understanding and use of Log strategic documents (ambitions, action plans) as part of operational leadership development
-
Reinforce knowledge of Log management tools and platforms, ensuring mentees can navigate and apply them effectively in their role
2. Cross Functional Coordination (Operations – Logistics - LnD)
-
Promote regular, clear and transparent communication between the mentee and their functional manager, helping maintain coherence with operational priorities while respecting established management and reporting lines
-
Strengthen LogCo and LTL mentees’ understanding of their respective roles within the CMT (Country Management Team) or PMT (Project Management Team), including their strategic responsibilities and interfaces
-
Facilitate links between mentees and LnD Advisors/Managers, ensuring they can access appropriate learning modalities and support
-
Ensure effective synergies between the Beyond Training – Log Leadership initiative, L&D modalities, and mentees needs, contributing to coherent and complementary support
-
Support and enrich the broader Mentor community by contributing logistics specific expertise, fostering dedicated exchanges within the Log Mentoring community in collaboration with the LWFU and the Mentoring & Coaching Hub (MCHub), and helping surface shared priorities, while also strengthening connections with the wider LogCo community
-
Engage in continuous development of mentoring practice, including supervision, reflective practice, and accreditation processes, in collaboration with LnD and the MCHub
3. Enabling Safe & Inclusive Environments in Logistics
-
Strengthen a strong risk‑management culture among mentees by supporting them to systematically address all risk categories and understand how a comprehensive risk-management approach underpins safety, security, quality of care, continuity of operations, and safeguarding
-
Encourage mentees to integrate safeguarding relevant considerations into logistical decisions to ensure protection, dignity, and secure interactions
-
Promote inclusive and people-centered aware leadership, modelling MSF’s values (respect, dignity, healthy boundaries), and supporting women, Country Based Staff (CBS) staff, and underrepresented groups
-
Acknowledge conditions that may hinder the mentee’s ability to learn or benefit from mentoring -including wellbeing issues, unsafe or disrespectful work environments, or discriminatory behaviours - and encourage the mentee to seek support or report through the appropriate channels, offering accompaniment if they choose to do so
