Communications and Audiovisual Coordinator (m/f)

As part of the communications department in Brussels, the field communications (Combo) and audiovisual (photo and video) units focus on ensuring a constant stream of information on MSF interventions, supporting field teams with their communications activities and raising awareness about the plight of the populations which the organisation assists.

The Communications and Audiovisual Coordinator leads and manages these two units, which are staffed by a team of approximately 10 communications professionals (communications officers, video editor, photo and design editor; based in Brussels and other locations).  He/she operates under the supervision of the Director of Communications based in Brussels.  

TASKS AND RESPONSABILITIES  
In order of priority, her/his tasks and responsibilities are as follows:

As a coordinator, to:

  • Prioritise and design the short and longer term external communication plans, activities and tools to be developed in support of MSF’s global priorities and needs
  • Advise on and define the strategic avenues and content of MSF’s public communications and positioning
  • Ensure the coherence, relevance and technical quality of communication activities developed by Combo and the Audiovisual Unit
  • Lead and advise other departments on communication strategies in the event of crises involving MSF or its staff members
  • Liaise and interact closely with other MSF sections worldwide in order to identify and contribute to joint communications initiatives and strategies
  • Develop and roll out communications training courses for MSF staff at headquarters and field levels

As a manager, to:

  • Coordinate the daily activities of the members of his/her team, and provide them with the necessary support to ensure the achievement of identified priorities
  • Manage and support each team member’s professional development (including  recruitment, evaluation and career development)
  • Define and guarantee a proper allocation of communications resources in key strategic locations in order to provide efficient support to MSF’s communications aims and needs
  • Define and assume responsibility for budget allocation and spending

Although the coordinator will spend most of his/her time in Brussels, he/she is expected to travel to project locations from time to time, as well as to MSF sections abroad.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
In order to be considered for this position, candidates need to demonstrate:

  • a strong professional background in journalism and communication (minimum 5 years experience required).
  • solid knowledge of and experience with the international media scene
  • considerable experience in team management
  • excellent writing and communication skills
  • the ability to make decisions and communicate them clearly
  • strong capacity to deal with stress and short deadlines
  • good team spirit
  • a comprehensive working understanding of humanitarian interventions, their principles and ethics.
  • Fluency in English, working knowledge of French


In addition, the following skills would be highly valued:

  • analytical skills
  • field experience and knowledge of/experience with MSF, or similar international/humanitarian agencies, is a plus
  • knowledge of video and photography
  • the ability to develop a consultative and problem-solving approach
  • the flexibility to travel at a very short notice, as and when required
